Angel Zapata Martin has replaced Nieves Barragan Mohacho as executive head chef at Sam and Eddie Hart’s Spanish restaurant group Barrafina.

The Barcelona-born chef will oversee all three of the group’s London restaurants, working closely with the chefs at each site.

His appointment comes after Mohacho and group general manager Jose Etura left Barrafina in February to launch their own Spanish restaurant.

Barrafina Frith Street won a Michelin star in 2014, and the group’s Adelaide site was named National Restaurant of the Year at the 2015 National Restaurant Awards.

Martin was previously sous chef at the three-michelin-starred Barcelona restaurant Can Fabes and head chef at Ossiano in Dubai.

He also worked as head chef and teacher at Barcelona’s internationally recognised Hofman School and its one-Michelin-starred restaurant.

“It’s an honour to take up the executive head chef position in a restaurant loved by so many and to have the confidence of a team I have so much respect for,” says Martin. “I’m looking forward to getting stuck in.”
