'Super budget' hotel operator EasyHotel is planning to open a hotel in Ipswich after conditionally acquiring a former nightclub.

The hotel group, which currently owns and operates three hotels in the UK and operates 18 franchised hotels in Europe and the Middle East, hopes to turn the building in the town's Northgate Street into a 94-bedroom hotel following an investment of £4m.

Purchase of the property is subject to EasyHotel gaining planning consent to change the use of the Grade II listed building which sits within the town's main shopping area. If all goes ahead EasyHotel said the hotel would open next year.

EasyHotel CEO Guy Parsons said: “We are delighted to be investing in the vibrant cultural centre of Ipswich which is a gateway to the UK’s highly popular east coast. We expect to benefit from growing local business and tourism in the area as we extend our owned brand presence in the UK.”

The news of a hotel in Ipswich comes a day after EasyHotel's announcement to open its first owned hotel in Europe.

Land on Barcelona's Gran Via has been bought by the company to build a 200-bedroom EasyHotel which it hopes to open by the end of 2018.

EasyHotel is also planning to open hotels in Liverpool and Manchester next year.
